You don't need a hub to connect 2 computers, only 3 or more.

I believe using a hub increases performance even on a 2 computer network. Plus it gives you flexibility for future devices. The networks in a box come with cables, cards, and hub. They can be had pretty cheaply, often for less than the cost of the network cards and cables without the hub.
