Now I see the grey area. You contend apparently that Kippola declared Siebel the gorilla in CRM though I think the book isn't clear about that.

"First of all, it must defend its leading position in the large enterprise SFA and customer service categories where the contenders include not only Vantive and Clarify, who are both still fast-growing chimps (gorilla Siebel grew revenues 89% in 1998, while Clarify grew at 48% and Vantive 39%), ..."

If you narrow it down to the SFA niche, I would have felt comfortable declaring Siebel the gorilla a long, long time ago. SFA is only a part of CRM. The sentence includes Siebel as a leader in customer service, but for me there is nothing definitive in that sentence saying Siebel is also the gorilla in customer service.

You might be right about Kippola's opinion. I only wish he had been more precise in his writing.

My thinking that you are wrong is substantiated by his comments about the competitive arena of CRM suites. After going on and on about that he writes on page 278 that it is "an ongoing gorilla game in progress." I don't think he would have written that if he had declared Siebel the gorilla.

I could be wrong, though it's a little early in the year for me to make my first mistake. :)
