The Edmonton Journal reports in its Saturday edition that diamonds are in
Alberta's eyes. Reporter Bryant Avery says that land-based exploration with
easy access gives the province an edge but it is still a long road to
production. Dale Leckie, a Calgary-based research scientist for the
Geological Survey of Canada, says the word "likely" is still too strong,
but there is "tremendous potential" in Alberta. Ashton Mining of Canada
president John Auston says the testing of gems is at an early and
inconclusive stage, but he and other long-time explorers are clearly
excited. Troymin Resources president Jack McClearly says the Buffalo Hills
exploration is a very significant play. He says he does not think there is
another diamond exploration area in the world that has moved along as
rapidly as Buffalo Hills. Roy Eccles, a geologist with the Alberta
Geological Survey, cautions that it may be several years before we know if
the diamonds in Alberta are rich enough to warrant a mine.
