---Makers expect to announce DVD-RAM
standard in April

Source: Nikkei English News

Nikkei English News via Individual Inc. : Ten leading consumer electronics
manufacturers, including Matsushita Electric Industrial Co. (6752) and Sony
Corp. (6758), have agreed on a common standard for rewritable digital video
discs (DVD-RAM) and will release it within this month, industry sources said
Tuesday. The standard is a compromise between a format proposed by a
group centering on Matsushita and Toshiba Corp. (6502) and one offered by
Sony and Philips Electronics NV. The agreement should lead to availability of
DVD-RAM media by the end of this year.

A single-sided DVD-RAM will be able to store 2.6 gigabytes of data --
equivalent to an hour of full-motion video, about four times the capacity of
current magneto-optical discs.

Formal agreement on the standard is expected when senior executives of the
10 firms meet shortly. Other participants include Time Warner Inc., Thomson
SA, Hitachi Ltd. (6501), Pioneer Electronics Corp. (6773), Mitsubishi
Electric Corp. (6503) and Victor Co. of Japan. (6792)
