Le premier ministre israélien a dévoilé, lundi 2 février, son intention d'évacuer toutes les colonies de la bande de Gaza, provoquant les menaces des colons, la stupeur de son propre parti, le Likoud, mais aussi le scepticisme des Palestiniens.

La bande de Gaza compte vingt et une colonies, mais les propos de M. Sharon au journal indiquent clairement qu'il projette le démantèlement de toutes les colonies de ce territoire, sans exception. "Je pars du principe que, dans le futur, il n'y aura pas de juifs à Gaza", a ainsi déclaré M. Sharon.
The Gaza Strip contains 21 settlements, but the proposal of Mr. Sharon to the newspaper clearly indicates that he projects the dismantlement of all of the settlements in the territory, without exception. Les colons sont entre 7 000 et 8 000 à vivre dans une vingtaine de colonies fortifiées parmi une population de 1,4 million de Palestiniens. Aux termes d'accords intérimaires découlant du processus d'Oslo, les Palestiniens jouissent d'un statut d'autonomie sur 79 % de cette étroite langue de terre de 360 km2. L'Etat d'Israël conserve le contrôle du territoire restant, d'où le fait que les Palestiniens exigent son retrait dans la perspective d'un accord de paix conduisant à un Etat indépendant à Gaza et en Cisjordanie.
