XIAMEN, Fujian -- A flagship of China's video industry exported its first batch of video compact disc (VCD) players in December, to be followed by more exports this year.

Xiamen Solid Electronics Ltd, in co-operation with the Netherlands' Phillips Co and Japan's Marantz Co, is exporting VCD players to tap overseas markets.

The company's deputy general manager, Han Chengshun, called the event a "milestone" in China's video industry.

China's fledgling video industry has seen difficult times since its birth in the early 1980s. Abundant legal and smuggled imports have brought cut-throat competition to the industry, already hampered by high costs and inferior quality.

Xiamen Solid Electronics Ltd was helped by the State Council's 1993 decision to merge healthy electronics enterprises in order to increase the scale and technical level of the nation's video industry.

Xiamen Solid Electronics poured large amounts of capital into technology imports and innovations in 1994 and 1995. Stringent management standards have also boosted product quality, Han said.

In recent years, the corporation has manufactured a series of video tape recorders and players under its Amoisonic label.

The company's annual production capacity is 450,000 sets of complete machines and 1.2 million sets of plastic cases.

Over 50 per cent of the total spares and fittings of video products are produced by the corporation itself, he said.

He noted the corporation had achieved ISO9000 certification which contributes to its sales internationally. (BW News)
