It's not accurate of the article to report that there was a negative reaction on Slashdot, particularly in the overall context of the Java news today. For the most part, reaction on Slashdot to the licensing snippet was that it was merely similar to the type of licensing (benchmarking) terms that is the Microsoft type standard. There could very well be a shoe about to drop from Sun with regard to JVM speed-up, and that would explain the licensing language. Clearly HotSpot is behind schedule. Here is a year old 'HotSpot' link from the Sun website.

The first public beta of this new release of the JDK software will be available this month and contains several new features, including: the Java Foundation Classes (JFC), significant performance improvements (including a foundation for the
ultra-fast Java Virtual MachineTMimplementation code-named "HotSpot"), and a powerfully expanded security model. The final version of this
next JDK software release is scheduled to ship in the second quarter of 1998.

As an addendum; apparently, Sun has responded to that article by saying that they will not be enforcing the licensing clause in question. <g>
