ADSL: Ready For TV Broadcasting? (03/21/97; 2:25 p.m. EST) By Sam Masud, Computer Reseller News
SERGEANT BLUFF, Iowa -- It may not be ready for prime time, but asynchronous digital subscriber line (ADSL) technology can deliver television signals, according to officials of MCI Communications and NEC America.
In a trial that began last July, two channels of digital television -- Showtime and HBO -- are being carried to 10 homes in Sergeant Bluff, Iowa, over 2.5 miles of standard copper cabling provided by Northwest Iowa Telephone Co., an independent telephone company.
The pilot involves delivering MPEG-2 video over ADSL circuits operating at 6 megabits per second to a digital set-top box. NEC supplied the ADSL video switching equipment and related cards for the central office as well as the customer premise equipment.
The companies said the trial proved ADSL is suitable for television broadcast services, though the cost of encoders and set-top boxes is high at this time. The customers, they said, preferred the quality of 6-Mbps digital video to traditional, analog cable television.
According to NEC officials, the company's equipment has been further developed also to provide Internet connections. |
