OK, but why are you running chkdsk? I only run it when I defrag because the defragger won't run without it. I don't understand your purpose is subjecting yourself to that torture.
Yep, me, too. Why do I do these things to myself? ;-)
Mostly dumbness that now has its own logic. You may recall, sometimes when you restart in Windows, you will get a message which essentially says, unless you holler and scream (i.e. hit any key on the keyboard), Windows is now going to check one of your disks. And it tells you which one. It also guilt trips you with a bit of language that says you should and the universe will be a better place if you do.
Okay, I had had some problems with the external disk. So I thought, essentially, whatever. And, I was up at 5:30 because I couldn't sleep and needed to find a reason to go back to bed. So I was both groggy and vulnerable.
Once it got started, it ran well at first. It's just that now it's on the fourth of five steps. And, at this pace may not finish this weekend.
And I worry that if I do a cold shutdown, I lose the directory on the external disk.
I've got a friend who knows this stuff, a computer science faculty member at Columbia, who, if it continues at this pace, will get a phone call from me about the damage I'm likely to cause.
If anyone wishes to offer a suggestion, I'll certainly put it in the hopper. And be very grateful. |
