Sharonville Ford plant wins $200M investment

A package of incentives and a productive work force helped Ford's Sharonville plant win a $200 million investment from its parent. Ford Motor Co. said Friday that it will retool the plant to produce a new, fuel-efficient transmission, according to an Associated Press story.

"The Sharonville plant was selected because it is considered a center of excellence for building gears and employees there have been working very hard to assure world-class productivity," a Ford spokeswoman said in the story.

The state, county and city also worked hard to win the investment, offering incentives worth $1.5 million. The company had been considering other sites, including Mexico.

The Sharonville plant will be Ford's only local manufacturing facility after 2008, when its Batavia transmission venture is shut down.

Dearborn, Mich.-based Ford (NYSE: F - News), which lost $12.7 billion in 2007, the worst year in its history, is planning to close 16 plants and cut 45,000 jobs as part of its restructuring effort.
