And Stewart always responds: "We are a comedy show, not a news show!" Which is true.

A couple weeks ago I went to the Newseum to hear a talk by comedian Chris Bliss (who was a high school friend of mine) about the role of comedy in informing and stimulating public debate and politics. He made note of the Jon Stewart phenomenon and said that the key to the power of his show is the use of facts. Almost all his stuff begins with quotes or videos from the people he takes to task. Bliss thinks basing jokes on truth provides integrity, and thereby meaning and power, to comedy. Leave it to hate radio to make stuff up!
