Airline safety is only partly the responsibility of the airlines. That responsibility is shared with the FAA, who failed at least as gravely as did the airlines. And if you want to blame somebody besides the direct perpetrators for the attacks, blame our own government policy that has our CIA funding, arming, and training the likes of bin Laden, the Taliban, Noriega, and Saddam. Why haven't we seen more outrage at this?

There's little or nothing that the airlines could have done to prevent this. Terrorists could have effected these attacks if armed only with very sharp eyeglasses and martial arts training.

On the other hand, the airlines were all headed straight toward bankruptcy before the attacks. Will bailing them out in the short term have any lasting positive effect?
