I think this attack on American diplomats in Gaza has "legs" as a story. Why? Because 1) President Bush blamed the PA for it, and connected the PA-harbored terrorists with Al Qaeda, the first time an American President has done either publicly, 2) the PA is getting pressure on this one from their usual fan club in the EU (EU to Arafat: Take action against terror or hand over control jpost.com ), Arafat and the PA are really alarmed by this attack, which risks turning them into open enemies of the US, when they want to remain covert enemies, and 4) but if they take real action against this splinter group, it just shows up how they could take action after any bombing if they wanted to. They just don't want to.

I'm still fuming at this morning's Boston Globe, who informed me that this was the first Palestinian attack against "American citizens". Wrong. Against American targets, you mean. There have been many American citizens killed in the last three years, but since they were just American Jews eating in Israeli restaurants they don't count as American citizens, apparently.
