Didn't I read many times on this thread that CUBE was one of the
original inventors of DVD???>>

The main inventors of DVD were Matsushita, Toshiba, and a few other others. Although ten companies may own the majority of DVD patents, they don't own all of them. DVD players will be covered by not only DVD-specific patents, but also MPEG patents, CD patents, and general digital audio and video patents. For example, patents covering laser tracking in a CD player may also be applicable to laser tracking in a DVD player. Unfortunately, the major players in DVD and in MPEG have been unable to get together and "pool" their patents in order to license them as a package. As it stands now, a DVD or MPEG manufacturer must obtain patent licenses separately from each of the patent owners.

I suspect that CUBE has at least one representative on the MPEG working groups which define the various MPEG standards. Perhaps David or John can answer that question.
