John,

It's counter intuitive, but I think the increase in cap ex may be helping (the stock price). It gives investors the impression that although things look bad today, Intel has confidence in the future. And they are putting real dollars behind that confidence.

Some analysts are questioning whether the capex 2001 forecast is for real, or Intel is simply blowing smoke to make up for a not so great report.

The three reasons for the light 1Q forecast (Otellini)

1. Normal seasonal slowdown
2. Channel system, not processor, inventory (they tried to play this down, but it was a concern).
3. Economic situation

One guy said that Intel's inventory number is up 50% from last quarter. I have to check the numbers tomorrow and see if that's true.

I'm as uncertain as they are.

They're uncertainity could be problematical...I don't know whether that's their way of lowering projected 2001 estimates so that they can look good down the road....which like Mary said, is a good way to go, or if they just don't know what's coming down the pike...if so, then its not good at all.

I guess we will have to wait and see what AMD and Sanders say.....see if that gives further/better insight into the market situation.....although in the past 6 mos, Sanders has not been very good at predicting future demand.
