I have met a lot of conservatives who idealize a mythical point in the past much like Lake Woebegon where all was well and everybody enjoyed a life above average, thanks to the wonderful virtues of the leaders at the time.

Doesn't have much to do with reality for the other 98% of the human race but the ideal exists very strongly with some people.

I suppose liberals are more inclined to idealize about a future they want to achieve through good deeds and policies, many of which are implausible but still emotionally satisfying to hold.
