Any BT-Spain deal heralds telecoms alliance sea-change
LONDON,
Any strategic deal between Spain's Telefonica and British Telecommunications Plc's Concert partnership would instigate a sea-change in the European telecoms alliance landscape, analysts said on Thursday. Such an alliance would throw down the gauntlet to BT's arch-rival, America's AT & T Corp , and provide the U.S. telecoms giant with the latest in a series of setbacks. `I think it will lead AT&T to seriously question its European position,'' says Paul Staples, head of telecoms research at merchant bank Schroders. newspage.individual.com
Spain's Telefonica flirts with U.S. suitors
MADRID, Spanish telecommunications group Telefonica de Espana played coy on Thursday with a bevy of U.S. suitors, but said it should find a partner within six weeks. Chairman Juan Villalonga confirmed that his recently privatised company was in talks with major U.S. telecommunications groups. But he said Telefonica could afford to be choosy and set the pace of the talks. `Telefonica is the pretty little girl who all the top U.S. telecoms groups want to join up with,'' he said. `We are keeping all our options open. It's true that I see the chairman of AT&T Corp , but I've also met with the chairmen of GTE Corp , MCI , British Telecommunications and Southwestern Bell Corp ,'' he told reporters. newspage.individual.com
