First, though, sorry for remembering P2 availability as P1 - it was a long time ago (and it had been a long day). There was a period of 3 or 4 months when the only SMP PII systems on the market used Micron chipsets.

What is the bandwidth that P4's "Netburst" architecture can accept as a video stream, etc?

Just to put it in perspective, the PCI used by Intel's chipset was limited to 132MB/sec while Micron's chipset supported 528 MB/sec. A pentium 200 could transfer 800 MB/sec if the bus supported it. One of the reasons Intel's Rambus strategy is such nonsense is that streaming data has to come from a network or disk connection, which limits it to 132 MB/sec. Since PC100 supports 6 times that bandwidth, the whole "netburst" routine is total nonsense. A quadrupled PCI bus would most certainly help. Those bogus benchmarks that show P4 outperforming P3 and Athlon first load a lot of data into memory over the PCI bus, and don't count that time, then count the time it takes to move data already in memory from one location to another.

532 MB/sec PCI would have been a great addition to PCs, now it looks like LDT may be what replaces fast PCI.
