Simple talk we rely on us and gradual growth.

Bottom Line: Validation of Our Domestic Demand Story
As we have stated in recent reports, Singapore is making an important transition from an export-dependent economy to one that is more heavily driven by domestic demand from 2000. We think such a domestic demand driver will be the savior for growth in 2001. The massive rise in government consumption in 2000, the ongoing fiscal boost since mid-2000, and a rather generous budget, with the hint of a permanently lower tax regime, together validate our call for a more domestic-demand-driven Singapore economy.

The moderate downgrade in our GDP forecast from 6.6% to 6.1% does not reflect the failure of domestic demand to take up the slack caused by weakening external demand but rather the smaller, although positive, pro-domestic demand budget
