We broke the back of Japanese xenophobia and militarism.

Japanese were and are xenophobic.

Japanese were militaristic and will be again, in response to China's threat.

Japanese culture embraces modernity. In some areas, their technology is superior to ours.

They don't worship a sacred rock, they don't want to return to the seventh century, and, most important, there will never be a billion Japanese. The islands are too small.

But I think comparing Japanese xenophobia to Arab xenophobia is like comparing British anti-Semitism to Arab anti-Semitism. (Japanese are not anti-Semitic.)
