A BLESSING IN DISGUISE? Bothwell blog
Far be it from me to agree with Susan Estrich, but I think she has a point when questioning Sen. John McCain's judgment in agreeing to appear in a cameo role in the newly released R-rated movie "Wedding Crashers," which apparently contains more than a little raunchy behavior. It's a little ironic considering he's criticized Hollywood for marketing such movies to teenagers.
If John McCain were just another U.S. senator, you might say that it was quite a star turn, particularly for a Republican who is actually quite conservative on social issues. And since it's not just another senator, but John McCain, a man whose life story is of courage and service, maybe you'd say it's part of what makes him an appealing figure across generational lines. As he explained it, "It impressed my kids."
But McCain isn't just another senator. He is currently - according to the polls - the "front-runner" in the Republican race for the 2008 nomination, although Republicans are sharply divided as to whether that can hold in a process dominated by party regulars and Christian conservatives.
This reminds me of John Kerry's interview with Rolling Stone last year, when he dropped the F-bomb a couple times in order to appear "hip" to young voters before the election. And considering McCain recently hurried to console Dick Durbin after his "apology" for comparing American troops to Nazis, I'd say appearing in "Wedding Crashers" is more a John Kerry-style ploy than anything else. That said, I'm glad he decided to go this route because it will probably backfire, and I'm down with anything that will help keep John McCain off the Republican ticket in '08. therightreport.com |
