HP Chairman Sees 'Modest Impact' On HP's PC Margin LOS ANGELES (Dow Jones)-- "Hewlett-Packard Co. (HWP) Chairman and Chief Executive Lewis E. Platt said there are too many personal computers in the industry's distribution channel, and he expects these conditions to last for several months." . . <<It's fair to say the PC market has probably been better at times than it is right now" Platt said in a press conference held at the Internet World trade show in Los Angeles Wednesday. "There is no question that there is too much inventory in the channel.">> . . << Platt blamed the problems on Hewlett-Packard's competitors, namely Compaq, and, to a lesser extent, International Business Machines Corp. (IBM). He said Hewlett-Packard has tightly controlled its inventories and has just enough product on hand to meet its customers' demands.>> . . << This pricing pressure will hit the middle and high end of the PC market, Platt said - the area where Hewlett-Packard specializes, and where profits are greatest. "I think you're going to see it will probably have a modest impact on (Hewlett-Packard's) PC margins," Platt said. "Fortunately, it's not our only business.">>
