Worldwide sales of software that runs e-commerce will quadruple to $2.8 billion a year by 2002, analysts Datamonitor said today.

The British company said most of the growth would be in trade between companies rather than the more visible business-to-consumer market.

The latter accounted for 41 percent of electronic commerce software sales in 1997, but this share will be almost halved to just 22 percent by 2002.

Europe's share of the e-commerce software market over the same period is set to rise to 34 percent from 23 percent, the new report showed.

Datamonitor, one of Europe's largest information technology and communications analysis firms, noted business-to-business e-commerce focused more on increasing the efficiency of business processes than on generating revenue.

By 2002, supply and distribution software will account for 30 percent each of the overall market, procurement software for 18 percent and business-to-consumer software for 22 percent.

The Growth in demand for e-commerce platforms looks very strong for the next few years. This should benefit NETP, IMO.
