Hi, Janice!

I thought you might be fascinated to know that according to the history of English Christmas celebrations, mince pies, or Christmas pies, were made with an oval pastry crust said to represent the manger in which the Christ child laid. To eat a mince pie on each of the twelve days of Christmas (did you do this, Janice?), would ensure twelve happy months ahead.

Mincemeat was originally made with real meat--the heavy spices and fruit were added to cover up the rancid taste and smell of the rapidly spoiling meat. I guess they left the beef fat in for what is currently known in the food industry as "mouth feel"!!

Yummy!!

Christine
