You are right - semiconductor design and manufacturing is a much, much more capital intensive and risky proposition than making potato chips. The big difference is that investors tend to either love or hate semiconductor sector stocks but they seldom give a darn one way or the other about companies that make tasty snack chips. Snack chips are a good inflation hedge: when the tech industry is riding high, it is the fuel of all the techies who are glued to their computer screens. When the tech industries are out of favor, a bag of chips is often used to get anal and go into a carbohydrate drugged daze. Sell semis, buy Freetos.
