Wharfie, this is the kind of garbage science that makes people distrustful of scientists, especially in light of COVID-19:

Smoke from California fires may have killed more than 1,000 people

The study counted over a six-week period, which meant that the average death toll from the smoke was 166 per week.

Yet if you look at the COVID-19 death rates over the same time period, the 7-day moving average ranged from 86 to 146. It never hit 166.

That means the study concluded that more people died from smoke inhalation over the past 1.5 months than from COVID-19.

Which of course is B.S. There were no reports of increased emergency room visits due to smoke inhalation. No reports of increased ventilator usage at hospitals, which the state is closely tracking. No reports of morgues being filled up with bodies at a higher rate than normal, even taking the pandemic into account.

Gov. Newsom himself would have told the press all about the 1,000 deaths had they happened, because that would have supported his latest moves to stop the climate from changing.

No wonder people, especially on the right, are doubting the death rates from COVID-19, because even scientists are skewing numbers for the purpose of sensationalism.
