<<<Hi DvD (short for David)
Long time lurker and long on cube , Great wall page by the way.Now too my dumb
technical question ? What good does HDTV do us dummies that have Cable. Will
cable have to enhance their infrastructure to deliver HDTV.Are they mandated like
the broadcasters , Hell it seems 35%- 45% of major markets are cable subs. Im not
a techie , just like to know ?
Thanks , Emil>>>

1. Digital TV does not necessarily mean high definition TV (HDTV). Satellite TV is digital, but it is not high definition.

2. I don't believe that the cable folks are mandated to carry digital TV. They may want to carry it for competitive reasons, though. If you could receive three broadcast digital TV channels, would you buy a $1500 TV set AND give up your cable? Even if you bought the new TV set, you probably would keep the cable or satellite TV. It will be interesting to see how many digital channels will be broadcast in each market.

3. I don't think that the cable infrastructure will have to be upgraded to carry digital TV signals, unless there is too much noise and/or amplifier distortion on the system. Someone correct me if I'm wrong. Cable system upgrade is required for two-way cable, and many cable systems are doing, or trying to do, two-way upgrades.
