I'm not so sure the SAP - IBM deal is so significant. Oracle already competes directly against SAP in the ERP market, so the announcement is no surprise. More significant, however, is that SAP installations generally involve companies with a significant commitment to an already installed database platform. For companies where the standard database is Oracle, they are not going to install DB2 to run their SAP application. They will run it on Oracle. I doubt that we will see anything other than a handful of shops switch from Oracle to DB2 because of a new SAP implementation. The costs of switching (retraining, rebuilding existing applications) are prohibitive. -Michael
