Wharf, the thing holding us back was that our whole house and everything in it is/was dated. We laughingly knew that once we started, it would be dominos because once you buy something new everything around it looks shabby.

All I can say is that I'm down to the stove, lol. Everything in the kitchen....even the sink, the disposal and the sink faucet are new. The furnace was joined by a new hot water heater (my, those things are expensive) and new AC outside.

The recession brought lots of good deals to the surface and cheaper labor, too. The ice storm last February damaged our roof so much that our insurance paid for a new roof and part of the guttering so we found good deals on replacing all the guttering and repainting all the trim outside and just did it all at once.

The power surges during the ice storm blew out the 25 year old fridge and insurance gave us $1200 toward a new one (didn't even know we had appliance coverage...ha).

So actually, I guess the ice storm triggered everything, not really the stimulus, because the new refrigerator really stuck out and made the other appliances look pretty sad. It's a Samsung French door with the freezer on the bottom. The styling is sleek and beautiful and it makes me smile when I walk in the kitchen. You might check out the Samsung's.
