SINCE I'VE HUNG OUT WITH THE IRAQ ARMY, I'LL CHIME IN [Michael Graham]
...they are making real progress. While in Iraq last week, I talked to many of the soldiers involved in training the IA, and the reviews were positive. The great thing about talking to NCOs and "grunts" is that you don't get the standard-issue BS.

Some of the soldiers I spoke with were very honest about the mixed motives of the men joining the Iraqi Army--just as some people have differing (and less than noble) motives for joining the US Army. These same soldiers said the Iraqi soldiers were improving all the time, learning the basics and some were learning them fast.

Even more impressive were the reports from Camp Falcon (responsible for patrolling the "Highway of Death") about joint operations with the Iraqis. The soldiers on the ground insisted that the Iraqis who were kicking in doors with the Americans were more than just "right-seat rides." The Iraqis were partners--junior partners, perhaps, but partners nonetheless.

The buzz from the military brass was "The Iraqis will be ready in two years." That timeline was echoed for the most part by the NCOs who work for a living, too
