Siemens signs 3-yr flash memory deal with Intel
FRANKFURT, Feb 8 (Reuters) - Siemens AG said on Thursday it had agreed a deal with Intel Corp (NasdaqNM:INTC - news) for the world's largest microchip maker to supply it with flash memory chips worth over $2 billion in the next three years. The German electronics and engineering group said at a news conference in Seville the contract would guarantee it could meet demand for new generation mobile handsets over the medium-term.
Siemens, the world's fourth largest mobile handset maker, sold 24 million handsets in its last business year, but fell short of an original target of 30 million following problems with faulty chips from another U.S. supplier.[Hmmmm?]
Flash memory chips, which are vital to wireless communication equipment like handsets, retain data even if external power supplies are interrupted.
Roland Koch, president of Siemens' networks unit, said the group would consolidate its position as one of the top companies in the mobile communications sector with a broad offering in both network infrastructure and handsets.
``We are the only company that covers the whole spectrum,'' he said.
Rudi Lamprecht, president of the mobile communications unit, said Siemens was already the world's number three producer of mobile network infrastructure.
The group had won 11 contracts to build new generation Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS) networks in Europe, putting it at number two behind Sweden's Ericsson , which had won 22 contracts, some with other constructors. |
