Gibson Leaves Hollywood Begging for Apocalypto
Libertas

“Now they pay.”

The lead story in Variety today is about Mel Gibson’s top-secret project Apocalypto, which Disney won a bidding war to distribute. Apocalypto is apparently set in an ancient civilization some 3,000 years ago. [The title is a Greek term meaning “an unveiling” or “new beginning."] We here at LIBERTAS are guessing this might be Atlantis-related …

The beautiful thing about all this is that Gibson had the town come begging to him for this project - confirming suspicions all along that Hollywood is terrified about its inability to reach non-liberal audiences. As Variety reports: “Production chiefs went to Gibson’s office in Santa Monica this past week to read the script under his watchful eye.” Gibson apparently then extracted “stringent distribution terms” from Disney, as Gibson will be totally financing the project himself. Variety even declares that “Gibson is [in a] league with George Lucas” now in terms of his ability to dictate terms of distribution on such large-budget, self-financed features.

Mel will not star in the film himself, but will write and direct.

As excited as we are about the story material (and the cool title), the industry politics of this are even more exciting. This entire episode confirms that Hollywood can still be bent toward market forces when conservatives show up in theaters to support films they like. The only reason any of this is happening is because millions of you out there showed up in 2004 to see The Passion and ensured that film would be a hit. Show Hollywood how it can make money off conservative-leaning films and the town will slowly, gradually, grudgingly change. Stay home and nothing will happen …
