Help requested: Computer store recommendation.

Can anyone recommend a good U.S. online screwdriver shop or OEM? I need to build a system optimized for voice recognition for my girlfriend who is in California/Bay area. Ordinarily I would build the thing myself but I'm in Toronto so that would make it difficult. Also I'm unfamiliar with the U.S. merchants, so I don't know where to look. I'm need a shop that will allow me a lot of flexibility in choosing components. She's a student so we need something cheap but powerful with lots of RAM. Unfortunately the big OEMs tend to gouge on memory upgrades while bundling lots of unnecessary stuff with the faster Athlons (i.e. expensive video cards, cdr drives, and superfluous software bundles). But they do offer financing which would be very helpful for her budget. Can anyone offer advice?
