C-Cube announced its single-chip MPEG-1 encoders in late 4Q 1996. I believe such cards from Data Translation, Optibase, etc. will be available and cheap by summer.

Since C-Cube is the sole supplier of this product, they can lower their chip price (i.e. shrink their margin to stimulate higher demand, making it possible for all desktop PC consumers).

Nobody expected MPEG-1 decoder boards to be a standard equipment on PC's last year, before all those Toshibas and Sonys hit the US market in the summer. Hmmm. the shorts may be in for a big surprise here.

"I hope C-Cube stays in business."
