Financial Express via NewsEdge Corporation : Intel Corporation on Wednesday introduced Centrino mobile technology in India that includes a new mobile processor, related chipsets and 802.11 wireless network functions. Centrino is a part of Intel's WiFi (wireless fidelity) enablement initiative that helps solve last mile access and networking for desktop computer, according to Intel Asia Electronics director-South Asia Avtar Saini. "Centrino mobile technology is all about processing power, chipsets and wireless technology," Mr Saini said. Intel globally has set aside $150 million for enabling new WiFi capabilities, services and deployment. Intel estimates that by 2003, more than 51 per cent of mobile PCs will have wireless access points. "Unwiring the PC will change the way people use computers, allowing them to communicate, be productive or be entertained wherever and whenever they want," he said. Meanwhile, Acer also announced the launch of TravelMate 800 series based on Intel's latest Centrino mobile technology. This notebook is priced at over Rs 1.35 lakh, according to an Acer official. Intel is likely to work with wireless network service providers, hotels, airports, retail and restaurant chains in India to accelerate deployment and increase awareness of wireless public hotspots. Hotspots are locations where users can connect using 802.11 wireless technology. "Globally there are 15,000 public wireless hotspots and we expect that by 2006, there will be a total of 300,000 hotspots," Mr Saini said. The Centrino mobile technology based notebook system is priced at $1,399, according to a company official.
