I encountered this information from several sources during the course of due diligence and assumed it was common knowledge. This is one source...a capsule from the WSJ services...

Advanced Fibre Communications

Left out of the loop? Advanced Fibre Communications (AFC) makes the Universal Modular Carrier 1000 (UMC) system, a digital local loop carrier that gives telephone companies, cable TV broadcasters, and other telecommunications providers a low-cost method of delivering voice, video, and data signals to nonurban service areas. The system has been sold to more than 600 phone companies in the US (including Ameritech and GTE) and to companies in Asia, Europe, and Latin America. Cable television companies also employ UMC to help them provide phone service over their cable systems. AFC's latest UMC system can handle about 2,000 subscribers. Telecom equipment maker Tellabs owns 8% of AFC.
