This reminded me of my Wall People story. I live in a town home that is 1/2 of a duplex. In June, to get away from so many stairs, I moved into an empty bedroom on the first floor. The first night in that bedroom, about 4:30 AM, I heard someone coming down those stairs. Startled, I jumped out of bed to find no one there. I walked all through the house... no one. The next morning, same thing. I sat on the edge of the bed and concentrated on the very clear sounds of someone on the stairs. POW! it dawned on me what I was hearing was actually my neighbor on the other side of the wall going down their own stairs. I never hear them, not at all, but now with one of my walls adjoining their staircase, those sounds were faint, but real. That gave all of us a good laugh.
