The Washington Surburban Sanitary Commission (WSSC), our local water company in the Washington, DC area, had an article in their October 1997 "Pipelines" newsletter which discussed the use of ozone in treating water. While ozone is used in Europe to treat surface water, the idea of using ozone to treat water supplies in the US is under research. Problem is that w/ the short life of ozone, it would not alone provide clean drinking water because the delivery pipelines are not sanitary. Noted studies being done by U. of North Carolina. The article ended in saying that the redesign of the WSSC Patuxent River Water Filtration Plant may use ozone as part of their treatment process if benefits (i.e., less use of chlorine) prove beneficial.
