Seemingly the paragraph you found attributes a negative to them that must be overcome by the consciousness.
Yes, but it also acknowledges the difficulty of overcoming them, and that perhaps that there is no need to overcome it. The important part seems to be becoming aware of the tension, and resolving it.

I dislike excerpts for the reason you gave and will try to chew up some big bites rather than nibbles in the next two days which belong to me me me except for learning a Brahms piece that right now is causing me enormous tension.

The only thing so far I have found on gender roles, is that the male forms his original female image from his mother and that in older societies there were formal rites of passage that moved a child into adulthood by rebirths and ceremonies, leaving the mother protective figure behind. Modern man having no such ceremony can transfer the mother female image onto his wife in one of two ways-- either he expects to be cared for and protected, or he develops an intensified feeling of male superiority. I am a believer in rituals. I think they are very important. Maybe we need some new ones.

This was just an aside-- but gosh, it shows how truly complex a thinker Jung was. Still, I do think that we have to remember that he is still human and a product of his time- (and what a time! 1875-1961).

I first became aware of him when I read Anais Nin's diaries as a teen. (and weren't they eye-openers!).
