LOL! You're right! Had lunch with some friends today, two of whom are ----"pretty dern liberal' thank ye' very much"----
One of them mentioned the high taxes for some of the things here, including gas....and the other did as well....I had to just laugh, and did....They forgot who had been mentioning a few weeks ago, some of my gripes about extra taxes...of course, it was moi...
One of my other lib friends knows my opposition to the No New Gas Tax the Dem Gov, and Dem State House and Senate pushed through, and then put an emergency clause on it thinking that would stop the citizens from putting a referendum on the ballot (They thought wrong...we got an initiative signed and will be on in the fall!!!)....
Anyhow, she said "I don't mind paying high gas prices, since in Europe they are so much higher".... (And didn't mention that her now deceased hubby left her well fixed to not worry about much of anything having to do with money)....
I reminded her that most of Europe doesn't drive the distances here that we do, unless it is for pleasure. Our urban workers usually live miles from their places of work. Our farm produce has to be shipped hundreds and sometimes thousands of miles to get to the markets....all of which takes energy to get from A to Z....
Europe has rail, which they can afford...not only mostly, if not entirely paid for by the country, but the population is dense in many places in Europe and high speed rail works for them. We don't have that type of density in most of our country. |
