China will have the largest economy in the world by 2020 - 2040.

Chinese per capita GDP is about $5,600 (2004 est.) - and with the wide income disparity between rich and poor that's not a good way of analyzing the purchasing power of the ordinary Chinese citizenry.

In contrast, US per capita GDP is $40,100 (2004 est.)

Taking a trend line and projecting it in the same direction into infinity is taking artistic license with economic facts. On the other hand, a lot of people on SI love their chart patterns . . . .
