Hello Larry S, thanks for the feed back..the reason I became interested in VRB is, in many applications ,it is all about storage of electrical energy...there have been no breakthroughs in large electrical storage with the exception of VRB's redox battery.
I have a small solar system with 8 deep cycle 6 volt battery's that is not being used to its potential ...because of storage...Many days go by when my system is producing 10 or better amps which does not mean anything because my battery's are full..large storage is what is needed and that is what A VRB system would provide.
It is the same with wind turbine, wind mills, or solar panel's...you must be able to store what is produced to be able to put it back into the grid at the most advantageous time or use it at the most advantageous time..that is the key, and that is why I am in VRB... regarding your refernce to San Fransisco trolley system yes this works because the trolleys have a "third rail" which is electrified... that is how they get their power and the electrical energy from the trolley dynamic braking down the hill is put into the third rail and is used by one going up the hill..what i was talking about was diesel elecric locomotives ...no third rail..the ones that haul 90 something percent of the worlds railway frieght.

edit..rooftop turbine feeding a VRB battery..thats the ticket<<gg>.
