If this were being done correctly, Sal, both companies would have been charging for their production browsers all along, and Microsoft would not have had a prayer.
You say, well *some* people get the browser on approximately the same basis with both companies, free. And I say, well millions pay for the Netscape browser. Nobody pays for the Microsoft browser. In addition, they had to revamp their Windows 97 plans partly because 'the interface is the browser' philosophy for windows was running into trouble, so actually their approach to the browser has cost them and their shareholders money, as that has much to do with the recent softness in MSFT share prices.
I might add, at many companies, it is policy to pay for shareware, and in those cases the payment level approaches 100%. There are people who do this for legal reasons. Ever hear of the SPA and their raids?
