It's equally mysterious why a celebrity culture flourishes here.

The rise of celebrity culture parallels the move away from the extended family to the nuclear family, and even smaller units.

They form an alternative to the extended families we've lost or moved away from. Para-relationships, para-family, something like that. We pretend like they're our friends and relations.

Not just movie stars. Politicians, pundits, NASCAR drivers, celebrity chefs . . . . whatever appeals to you, the need is filled.

What else explains Dittoheads? People who scream for Hillary? Emeril?
