Missile suspected of hitting Tu-154 fell 180 km from it
KIEV, Oct 08, 2001 (Itar-Tass via COMTEX) -- The Ukrainian missile launched from an S-200 surface-to-air system that could have shot down Russia's Tu-154 passenger plane over the Black Sea last Thursday fell 180 kilometres from it, the commander of the Ukrainian air- defence troops, Colonel-General Vladimir Tkachev, said.
He told a press conference on Monday that the missile had flown about 51 kilometres with the switched-on engine and about 20 to 25 kilometres more by inertia until it destroyed itself. Its fall in the sea was properly documented, he said.
So the S-200 missile flew about 75 kilometres while the Tu- 154 fell more than 250 kilometres away from the place where it had been launched.

Between 1.30 p.m. and 1.45 p.m. (1030-1045 GMT) when the tragedy happened, a drone plane used as a target in an air defence exercise in the Crimea was also fired at from an S-300 surface-to-air system. Its missile hit the target.

A specialist said that usually three or four surface-to-air systems fire at such a target, and it is a real success if the target gets hit by one of the two missiles that were launched.

Eleven drone planes were used as targets during the exercise. Nine of them were destroyed by surface-to-air systems some 10 to 30 kilometres away from the point of firing. One target self- destroyed and one landed on a parachute on the training range.
