neolib, From a historical standpoint India was strangled by burdensome regulation and state controls, but they had (and continue to have) a huge cultural push with regards to education and engineering in particular. As Government reform developed this helped retain intellectual capital at home. Why is India ahead (with respect to the size of its middle class)? A number of reasons: o English speaking o Education valuing o no Cultural revolution to decimate the scientific and emerging middle classes Today China is making huge progress and I am rooting for them, but I find it funny how little is said about India.
