Tuesday December 8, 7:17 pm Eastern Time Infoseek shares surge on buzz over Disney deal
PALO ALTO, Calif., Dec 8 (Reuters) - Shares of Internet service Infoseek Corp (Nasdaq:SEEK - news), which have long trailed the rest of the high-flying Internet sector, rallied Tuesday as the company prepared to launch its new online ''portal'' with partner Walt Disney Co(NYSE:DIS - news).
An Infoseek spokeswoman said the companies would launch a beta version of the new site, go.com, before the end of the year, and planned to take the service live in January.
Infoseek, which formed an alliance with Disney over the summer, says the new portal will incorporate much of the content from Disney properties and also offer search and navigation features that are superior to its competitors.
It has said all along that it would launch the new service before the end of the year, but investor interest has dramatically picked up as the date approaches.
''The buzz is in the air now,'' said Infoseek spokeswoman Kelly Schenefiel. ''People are finally going to see the product.''
Infoseek shares surged $8.94 to $44.88 and were one of the most actively traded issues on NASDAQ Tuesday. |
