It is a little known fact that the civil war wasn't fought primarilly because of emancipation of the slaves. Abraham Lincoln was proposing a stronger federal government which would usurp states rights. One of the proposals was freedom for the slaves. Lincoln didn't make the emancipation proclamation until he felt the war was won at Gettysberg. This proclamation was used to turn the war into a just war, and boosted morale. Revisionists later claimed the war was for freedom for the slaves.
