Oil reserves in the US have dropped from 39b barrels in 1970 to 21b barrels today. It's pretty obvious that we simply don't have enough reserves to make a difference. If we only used our own reserves, we'd have enough for three years - then we'd be dry.

We simply don't have additional reserves to make a difference. ANWR is estimated to be between 4.3b and 11.3b. The newly found reserves in Montana and ND are estimated at 3b and 4.5b. But, at current rates, we use 7.6 billion barrels a year.

If these figures represented your financial reserves and current spending, you'd be in a panic (at least I would). We simply can't drill ourselves out of the situation - it may even hurt us to try, as we'd use up all our reserves.
