It's not technology, its hardware manufacturing vs. software. Indians excel at almost anything related to software, including IC design which is largely a software activity these days. They don't compete in IC fabrication. Why this is so, I don't know.

It is all about language. Computer programming languages originated at IBM, Livermore, Bell labs, University of Illinois, Carnegie Tech, MIT, Oxford University, Cambridge, etc.

Note the common thread. From Fortran, Algol, Cobol, Basic to Java - all the footnotes, all the source code, all the documentation, were written in the english language.

You could develop th greatest computer programming language (say in Klingon) and you can't get anyone to use it (get to critical mass), that language is not going anywhere.

The reasons why Indians excel in software (computer programming) is because you have a big population that is educated in the english language. They work for a lot less than high maintenance "white programmers" (meaning anyone living and working in the United States - be they black, white or yellow). Bingo - Indians excel in software.
